What I would have done differently to pass the CompTIA Security+.

If you haven’t read my post about what I did do to pass, this is meant as a bit of a part two. I passed and don’t regret how I went about it but going over the tools and resources I used, there are a couple that stand out as wonderful options that I either didn’t know about at the time or had picked something else for the sake of keeping things simple.

  1. CertMaster Practice. In my previous post on passing the exam, I talked about the extremely helpful the labs offered by CertMaster were. I ended up going with Professor Messer’s practice exams but for my next CompTIA certification, I think I will be going straight to the source. Their interactive interface and exact phrasing used on the exam (Messer gets very close) would be helpful for understanding exactly what the answer should be and finding that rhythm.
  2. Find a good book. I don’t know why I didn’t go this direction, I did plenty of reading for sure and I learn from books all the time. However, this time I went without it. If I would have selected one, it would have been Mike Meyers’ CompTIA Security+ Certification Guild. This book includes access to labs, practice exams, videos and software.
  3. Speaking of Mike Meyers, Udemy. I was first introduced to Mike Meyers when studying for the CompTIA A+ and even though I didn’t end up taking that exam, I found his instruction not only informative but entertaining and engaging. I would absolutely trust that these videos would have helped me pass and for the price, it’s well worth it.
  4. Engaged more with the community. Though I’m fairly active in the local Cybersecurity community in my area, there are tons of Discord study groups that go on with Professor Messer’s followers but I never seemed to find the time to participate. Speaking with others and learning along side them would help on the days where I felt completely lost. As I’m writing this, it occurs to me that I still can do this! As someone who passed, I can do there what I’m doing here, offering my experience to others who are about to take this exam.
